The amount to be paid differs on the basis of the type of visa applied for. The visa fee for US is pegged at around Rs 10240 ($ 160) other than the special cases that include visa for athletes, artists, entertainers, people with extraordinary abilities, fiancé/spouse of a US citizen etc.

Additional fee has to be paid to the National Visa Center, to the U.S. Embassy or Consulate, or to the Department of Homeland Security under special circumstances like a non-immigrant visa issuance.

The process of getting a US visa

Once you've paid the visa fee, the process of getting a US visa for Indians is simple. The next step needs you to schedule two appointments – first at the Embassy or Consulate and the second one at the Visa Application Center (VAC).

Make sure you have the following information while going for the first interview―

• your passport number,
• the visa application fee receipt number,
• the 10 digit barcode number from your DS-160 confirmation page

For your second appointment at the Visa Application Center (VAC), do not forget to carry these documents―

• A valid passport for US with the validity dates extending a minimum of six months beyond your intended period of stay in US,
• A confirmation proof for DS 160,
• A confirmation proof for your appointment,
• A photograph if the person applying for the visa is under 14 years of age.

Once your photo and fingerprints are taken at the Visa Application Centre, you need to visit the US Embassy or Consulate for your visa interview. Be sure to carry the following documents to the interview for successful submission of application for a visa for US ―

• A printed copy of your appointment confirmation letter,
• Your DS-160 confirmation page stamped at the VAC,
• Your current and all old passports if any,
• Supporting documents as per your visa type
